Blog 1, Chapter 1:
After reading Chapter 1 of Gatsby, I have decided that the major event that takes place is the dinner party at Tom and Daisy Buchanan's house. The Buchanan's are a wealthy couple who come from old money and live in East Egg, on Long Island. The Buchanan's invite two people over for dinner. One of which is Jordan Baker, a professional golfer from Long Island. The other guest is Nick
Caraway, a business and well-known, honest man from the mid-west. Nick becomes the non-judgmental narrator for the novel.
At the dinner, Nick is met by Tom Buchanan, who immediately comes across as rude and arrogant. Tom also hold much power over his wife, Daisy. Daisy Buchanan is somewhat blind to the actual world and tries to act as if she knows nothing, she is also very materialistic and lives a very lavish lifestyle. She is controlled by Tom even though he is cheating on her. Their terrible and very public relationship is revealed to Nick at dinner, who is in shock. However, despite the cheating, Daisy refuses to leave Tom because she relies on his money and life in the East Egg. I think that Daisy believes that she is living the "American Dream" in East Egg, and chooses to ignore her crumbling marriage. Throughout the chapter, much is said about a man named Jay Gatsby, but who he really is, is a mystery. At the very end of the chapter, we are finally semi-introduced to when Gatsby is first seen by Nick, but we know nothing about him.
Already, this book is pretty interesting and I can tell that the plot will be exciting. I like how drama is introduced in the very first chapter and character build up is already taking place. I am interested in seeing what happens between Daisy and Tom Buchanan. Their relationship is pretty ridiculous to me, because I think that Daisy is acting very foolish for not leaving. I think that by the end of the novel, Daisy will leave Tom and realize that she can live without all her 'old money'.I think that this theme of the American Dream will continue on throughout the entire book, in other characters too. I am also interested in learning more about Gatsby because he is such a mysterious character.
