Blog 2, Chapters 2-3:
Within chapter two through three in Gatsby, I've narrowed down the important events to 2 specific parties Nick attends. The first party takes place in whats known as the "Valley of Ashes", where the poorer people of New York live. Nick is invited to go the the valley with Tome Buchanan to visit Tom's mistress, Myrtle. Nick finds this very odd that he must meet Myrtle, but is forcefully led by Tom to the party. At the party, Nick discovers how Myrtle and Tom really act, which is not pleasant. Everyone at the party is very drunk, obnoxious, and rude. Talk comes up Daisy Buchanan, and at this, Tom becomes very violent and breaks one guests' nose. At that, Nick leaves the party late at night and heads home. For Nick, the party must have been very awkward and uncomfortable because he did not know anyone and he did not want to be involved with Tom and his mistress. The second major party that Nick attends, is one of the regular parties at Gatsby's mansion. Nick is surprisingly originally invited to the party directly by Gatsby, however they have yet to meet in person. Nick arrives at the party and searches for Gatsby, but gives up on searching for him and settle with eating dinner with Jordan Baker and a few other guests. While eating dinner, Nick is introduced to some mysterious rumors about Gatsby, some saying Gatsby "killed a man once" or "was a German spy during the war" or even that he "was in the American army during the war". It's obvious that Nick is flustered with all of these accusations toward Gatsby, and Gatsby's true identity remains a mystery. But, later in the evening, Nick finally meets Gatsby almost unintentionally. Gatsby and Nick really hit it of and quickly become friends and plan to meet up again the next day. But, as Nick watches Gatsby at his party, he realizes that Gatsby's past is still a mystery and no one seems to know what the truth is.
Within these two chapters, many things lead me to make new predictions and draw more conclusions than before. First, I think that Tom Buchanan is more of a jerk than I originally thought. The fact that he punched a woman in the face and broke her nose is absolutely shocking. This also leads me to believe that he maybe violent and abusive to Daisy at home, and she might be too afraid to leave Tom despite their terrible relationship. Also, the third chapter makes me question Gatsby more and more and his mysterious past. Even though Gatsby's character has been introduced briefly, I am still curious as to what brought him to New York and where he has come from.
How about when Nick actually meets Gatsby? Does he live up to all the hype? What is his personality like? Great writing, but hone in on who this character really is and make a prediction. Nice work so far!
